01 · The problem
Where they slip away.
01 / 04After hours
A new patient asks at 9:47 pm.
Plenty of new patients look for a dentist after work, when the office is closed, and a voicemail or a contact form is often all they find.
02 / 04The deciding question
“Do you take my insurance?”
If the answer isn't on your site in plain words, patients ask a practice that answers it, or an AI assistant that names one.
03 / 04AI answers first
58% lower click-through for the #1 result.
That's what Ahrefs measured for position one when an AI Overview sits above it. Fewer clicks reach even the top result, so your facts need to be in the answer itself.

Six months comes and goes.
Hygiene recalls that depend on someone finding time to call get missed, and so does the review a happy patient would have written.

One patient, one record, from a late-night text to the next six-month visit.
Engineering notesHow the patient lifecycle works in a dental practice engine
Dental practices lose patients in small gaps: the new-patient text that arrived on a Sunday night, the insurance question nobody answered until Monday, the reminder that never went out, the six-month recall that depended on someone finding time to call. A web engine closes those gaps by connecting the practice website to the systems that handle the conversation after the click.
When a patient texts after hours, the practice's CRM sends an automatic reply, with an opt-out, pointing them to the website. There, Engine Agent answers chats at any hour. It introduces itself as an automated assistant, answers from information the practice approves (new patients, the insurance plans the site lists, hours, forms, how to pay) and logs the details the front desk needs to the CRM. It never quotes an individual patient's coverage or cost, gives no dental advice, and routes anything clinical to the dental team.
Booking happens in the chat when the practice's calendar is connected, or through its online booking. Reminders, confirmations and six-month recalls go out through Dash Funnels, the CRM behind every web engine, as workflows our team sets up. Because the record remembers each patient's usual times and how they like to be reached, a recall can offer a slot that suits them. Texts go only to patients who have agreed to receive them, and every message carries an opt-out. After each visit Bird Local sends a review request to every patient the same way, never gated.
Dev and the conversation above are an illustration. The exact messages, timing, booking path and workflows are configured for each practice during setup, around the practice-management system it already uses.

Which dentist near me is taking new patients and takes PPO insurance?
Family Dental Care welcomes new patients of all ages. Its insurance page lists the plans it is in network with, and patients can book a cleaning online, call the office or send a text.

New patients welcome. Insurance answered upfront.
Engineering notesWhat separates a dental website that books patients from one that just exists
Most dental websites open the same way: a welcome message, a smile slider, a page about the latest technology. They describe the office. The patient arrived with two questions (are you taking new patients, and do you take my insurance) and decides in seconds whether this practice answers them.
A web engine leads with those answers in patient language, keeps booking, calling and texting one tap away on every screen, and gives the insurance plans the practice accepts their own plain-words page, the same page Engine Agent answers from. Accessibility is part of the same work: readable type, strong contrast, tap targets sized for a thumb, labelled forms, visible keyboard focus and one accessibility menu.
Behind the design, the practice, its dentists, treatments, hours and location are described in schema.org structured data, each treatment gets an answer-first page for the questions patients actually ask, and every fact matches the practice's listings. That is what search engines and AI assistants read when someone asks for a dentist nearby.
“Typical” describes the patterns we find most often when we audit dental websites; individual sites vary. PageSpeed is measured with Google's PageSpeed Insights, and results vary by page and content.

We see what your patients search for.
On the Managed + Growth plan, and with your permission, we read your Google Search Console and Bing data every month, see which treatments, questions and towns are rising or slipping, and tune titles, copy and answers. Services and service areas are linked to each other, and to answer pages where those exist, by rules that keep links natural.

06 · Questions
Questions people ask us.
Can Engine Agent answer insurance questions?
Yes, from information you approve. It answers from the list of insurance plans you give us (the same list your website shows) and notes the patient's plan so your team can verify benefits before the visit. It never quotes coverage or costs for an individual patient; those questions go to your front desk.
Does it give dental advice?
No. It introduces itself as an automated assistant, answers practical questions (new patients, hours, insurance, forms, paying a bill) and hands anything clinical, from a sore tooth to a question about a treatment plan, to your team.
Does it work with our practice-management software?
It works alongside it. Your practice-management system stays the patient record; the engine handles the website, the first conversation, reminders, recalls and reviews around it. How bookings reach your schedule depends on your system and its booking options, so we check yours during discovery and set up the cleanest path.
How do six-month recalls work?
Recall reminders go out through the CRM by text or email: texts only to patients who've agreed to them, each with an opt-out. Because the record remembers each patient's usual times and how they like to be reached, a recall can offer a slot that suits them, and they can rebook with one reply.
Will this replace our front desk?
No. It takes the repeat questions and the after-hours intake off their plate so they can look after the patient at the counter. During the hours you set, anything a person should handle goes to your team with the conversation attached; outside them, patients are pointed to the right contact.
How do review requests work?
After each visit, Bird Local sends a review request to every patient, never only the happy ones, because selectively asking satisfied patients goes against Google's review policies. Your team replies from one place, and new reviews can appear in a live widget on your site.
How many pages will our website have?
It depends on your treatments and the areas you serve. Across nine live VIS Mountain builds the average launch was 94 pages: a page for each treatment, the questions patients ask about it, insurance, and each area you cover.
Can you guarantee we'll show up in the map pack or in ChatGPT?
No one can honestly guarantee that. We make your practice the clearest, most consistent answer for your treatments and area (structured data, answer-first pages, matching listings and genuine reviews). On Growth plans, we then check month over month whether search and the major assistants are showing you.
